Hotel In New York: How Is Wyndham Garden Hotel Times Square South?

From the reviews I’ve read, the rooms are small, I know that much. Me, my parents and my 12 year old sister will be staying in one room with a double bed, and apparently their beds are awesome. The price was 179 USD per night, which because it’s a 15-20 minute walk to Times Square and all the major attractions are within a mile, I think it’s average, not the greatest deal, but not so bad right?
The only problem I’ve read in reviews is the area. I’m a bit afraid because the last time I went, I was 8 and now I’m 25, so I have no clue about areas…it’s apparently in the Garment district, so anybody know how safe that area is exactly? Is it livable for 2 nights…I can’t afford anything to ritzy or fancy because I’m on a low budget, but anyone know about this area? It’s 341 west on 36th street? I already booked it, so I’m hoping I get some somewhat positive reassurance :S
Also, if anybody’s stayed at that hotel, any advice or comments? I’ve literally read over 200 reviews, and most were good, but I’m still not sure…I live in Ottawa, Canada, so going to NY is kind of a big deal.
Also, any suggestions of must-see spots with families especially and discount shopping anyplace?
Greatly appreciate all the answers Thanks!
